Although produced until the end of life, the quality of a man’s sperm is not always the same at every stage of age. What happens if sperm quality decreases?
As women, it is not uncommon for us to hear the suggestion that women are married not too old, giving birth to children should pay attention to age, because the quality of eggs if the older is decreasing.
Then, it comes to mind that if a woman’s age affects the quality of the egg, how about the sperm produced by men? If there is an effect, why is it rare for men to be ‘demanded’ to marry before a certain age?
Back again to the original question, is it true that the quality of a man’s sperm can always be excellent from time to time?
The best sperm in the fertile age range
The answer, according to Dr Jon adiana Working as a Consultant- General Urologist & Andrologist, is not. There are a number of things that can affect the quality of sperm in a person’s body, such as age and lifestyle factors.
” That’s why, the quality of sperm in a person’s body is not always the same from time to time. But broadly speaking, the best sperm quality can be obtained in the fertile age range, which is between 25-40 years,” explained Dr.
The quality of this sperm, can be measured using a spermiogram test (sperm analysis test). According to the standards of the world health agency WHO, there are three parameters that can be used to measure sperm quality, namely:
- Amount (concentration)
- speed (motility)
- Form (morphology).
“As long as the person has excellent physical health and sexual health, the spermiogram image does not show any difference in the sperm quality of men aged 20, 30, and 40 years,”
Quality declines after childbearing age
However, after exceeding the fertile age range, then there are a number of changes in sperm quality. Based on a study conducted at the University of Otago, New Zealand, in 2014, sperm quality decreases with age . In addition to reduced sperm volume, sperm speed also decreased. As a result, it is more difficult for sperm to reach the egg to carry out the fertilization process
Research also shows a decrease in the quality in terms of the shape (morphology) of sperm. Changes in terms of shape is important to note because it indicates the genetic content contained in the sperm. The presence of significant deviations in sperm shape can make it difficult for fertilization to occur or even cause problems with chromosomal abnormalities, one of which can increase the risk of Down syndrome in the fertilized fetus.
Bad habits lower sperm quality
One thing that should not be forgotten, the age factor is not the only thing that can affect the quality of sperm. Diet and overall lifestyle actually have a bigger share in determining sperm quality. An unhealthy diet—for example, too much fat and sugar intake, can increase a person’s risk of obesity and diabetes. Both types of health problems can cause a decrease in sperm quality.
Not only that, according to dr. Anita, serious diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid, and hepatitis, as well as bad habits such as smoking, drug abuse, and alcoholism, can also cause a decrease in sperm quality. Cigarettes especially need to be avoided because the toxins contained in nicotine can damage the sperm head. As a result, sperm will have difficulty penetrating the egg cell wall.
Correction with a healthy lifestyle
The good news is that sperm quality that begins to decline can be corrected by starting to adopt a healthy lifestyle and adopting a number of good habits. If you are able to do this, it is not impossible that the sperm quality of men who are at the end of the fertile age limit is even better than those who are still in the middle of the fertile age range, you know!
What are some good habits that need to be adopted to improve sperm quality?
None other than by eating types of foods that contain balanced nutrition, increasing the consumption of foods rich in antioxidants (folic acid, vitamin C, zinc, vitamin E, and others), and doing regular exercise to maintain an ideal body weight.
The habit of soaking in hot water or wearing tight pants also needs to be reduced to avoid an increase in temperature in the testicles. The reason is, an increase in temperature in the testicles can risk lowering sperm count.
“Not only that, sexual health conditions also need to be maintained. That is, do not just change partners and have sex regularly so that the sperm production cycle is well maintained,” included Dr.
So, come momes, invite couples to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that sperm quality is maintained!
