The quality of this sperm, can be measured using a spermiogram test (sperm analysis test). According to the standards of the world health agency WHO, there are three parameters that can be used to measure sperm quality, namely:

  1. Amount (concentration)
  2. speed (motility)
  3. Form (morphology).

“As long as the person has excellent physical health and sexual health, the spermiogram image does not show any difference in the sperm quality of men aged 20, 30, and 40 years,”

Quality declines after childbearing age

However, after exceeding the fertile age range, then there are a number of changes in sperm quality. Based on a study conducted at the University of Otago, New Zealand, in 2014, sperm quality decreases with age . In addition to reduced sperm volume, sperm speed also decreased. As a result, it is more difficult for sperm to reach the egg to carry out the fertilization process

Research also shows a decrease in the quality in terms of the shape (morphology) of sperm. Changes in terms of shape is important to note because it indicates the genetic content contained in the sperm. The presence of significant deviations in sperm shape can make it difficult for fertilization to occur or even cause problems with chromosomal abnormalities, one of which can increase the risk of Down syndrome in the fertilized fetus.

Bad habits lower sperm quality

One thing that should not be forgotten, the age factor is not the only thing that can affect the quality of sperm. Diet and overall lifestyle actually have a bigger share in determining sperm quality. An unhealthy diet—for example, too much fat and sugar intake, can increase a person’s risk of obesity and diabetes. Both types of health problems can cause a decrease in sperm quality.

Not only that, according to dr. Anita, serious diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid, and hepatitis, as well as bad habits such as smoking, drug abuse, and alcoholism, can also cause a decrease in sperm quality. Cigarettes especially need to be avoided because the toxins contained in nicotine can damage the sperm head. As a result, sperm will have difficulty penetrating the egg cell wall.

Correction with a healthy lifestyle
